About Event

Sports Management and Sports Law represent two important dimensions in the process of enhancing Sports systems within any country. This two-day Conference aims to bring together leading researchers, practitioners and academic scientists to exchange knowledge and ideas, and share their experiences about specific aspects of Sports Management and Sports Law. On Day 1, the Sports Management Track will focus on “Challenges facing Arab Sport”, “Cooperation between Arab Olympic Committees and Academia” and “Strengthening the UAE’s position as a leading global sport business and investment destination”. The Sports Law Track will focus on “Sport’s Dispute Settlements” and “Sports arbitration procedures in accordance with the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS)”.

The Conference will not only increase the awareness of sports in terms of management, legislation and governance but will also emphasize the role of educational institutions within the UAE in improving these attributes associated with a wide range of sports.

David Gallo started his career in private practice at a large law firm, and then served as corporate counsel at American Electric Power. David spent most of his career at the General Electric Company, first as an M&A and commercial transactions lawyer, and then in commercial leadership roles, including Director, Corporate Compliance for European Equipment Finance; Chief Marketing Officer for Financial Guaranty Insurance Corp; and, Managing Director, Corporate Development for GE Capital. Before joining the DIFC, David was CEO of a Saudi bank venture, and CEO of an Abu Dhabi-based global trading company. David received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Denison University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa; a Doctor of Law degree from University of the Pacific, where he served as newspaper Editor in Chief, and received the Corpus Juris Secundum Award for outstanding legal scholarship; and a Master of Business Administration, International Business, from Middlesex University, where he was the top graduating student.

John Nauright is Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation and Professor of Sport and Event Management at the University of North Texas in the USA. He is also Visiting Professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia; the University of Ghana; and the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados. Prior to coming to Texas he was Professor of Sport and Leisure Management and Director of Graduate Studies and Research in the School of Sport and Service Management at the University of Brighton in England. He is the author and editor of 24 books and 150 other refereed publications on sport, fitness and health globally including the award-winning 4 volume Sport Around the World: History, Culture and Practice; Sport Business in Leading Economies; The Rugby World in the Professional Era; Sport in the African World; Socio-Cultural Foundations of Human Movement. He holds a PhD from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, is a dual Australian-USA citizen and has lived and worked in Aotearoa/New Zealand; Australia; Barbados; Canada; Denmark; England; Scotland; South Africa; and the USA. He has served for many years on external advisory boards including the John Paul II Foundation for Sport (UK); Sacred Sports Foundation (St. Luica); FundLife Foundation (The Philippines). He is also Vice President of Strategic Initiatives of the Dallas Griffins of Major League Rugby in the USA.

Matthew D. Shank became Marymount University’s sixth president in July 2011. With a strong commitment to Catholic higher education and an understanding of Marymount’s diverse, inclusive learning environment, he began his first year by initiating a visioning process to clarify the University’s identity and way forward. Input from the Marymount community contributed to the resulting vision, which states in part that “Marymount University will distinguish itself through a culture of engagement that fosters intellectual curiosity, service to others, and a global perspective.”

In recognition of his focus on preparing students for the globalized environment of the 21st century, Dr. Shank received the 2012 Global Education Leadership Award from the World Affairs Council-Washington, D.C. Accepting the award on behalf of the University, he said, “The Council and Marymount share a common goal: Both organizations educate young people about global issues so that they will be prepared for success as citizens of a complex, diverse, and increasingly interdependent global community.”

Under his leadership, Marymount University has created and implemented a strategic plan known as “Building the Institution of Choice” and a comprehensive marketing plan called “Common Ground.” Dr. Shank has also instituted an employee incentive program, Ideas at Work, to solicit cost-saving, revenue-generating, and process-improvement ideas from members of the University community.

President Shank is active in community and business organizations, serving on the boards of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Arlington Community Foundation, the Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia, American University in the Emirates (Dubai), the World Affairs Council, Bishop O’Connell High School, Dominican Retreat House, and Leadership Arlington. He is an ex-officio member of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and a community advisor to the Arlington Free Clinic and Arlington Public Schools.

In the academic community, he serves on the boards of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, and the Washington Research Library Consortium. Most recently, Dr. Shank was named to the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. As Marymount’s president, Dr. Shank is also a member of many academic organizations, including the American Association of Colleges and Universities, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Before coming to Marymount, Dr. Shank served for three years as dean of the School of Business Administration and professor of Marketing at the University of Dayton. Prior to joining the University of Dayton, he was a faculty member at Northern Kentucky University and chaired the Department of Management and Marketing. During the 2003-04 academic year, he was an American Council on Education Fellow, assigned to the Office of the Chancellor at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Shank has also held academic appointments at the University of Mississippi and Southern Illinois University.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Shank has published numerous articles, presented at many conferences, and is the author of the book Sports Marketing: A Strategic Perspective (5th Edition). He has consulted with more than 75 organizations in the areas of marketing research, strategic planning, and marketing strategy. Dr. Shank holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Missouri-St.

Professor Kamilla Swart is a full Professor and Masters in Sport Management Program Director in the College of Business Administration, American University in the Emirates (AUE). Prior to joining AUE in 2017, she headed the Centre for Tourism Research in Africa, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT, from 2003). Her research interests include sport and event tourism, with a focus on mega-events, policies, strategies and evaluations. She graduated from Illinois State University in 2001 with a doctoral degree in education and sport tourism. Prior to joining academia, Kamilla worked as a sponsorship consultant for Octagon South Africa. She is the author of Sport Tourism and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to sport and tourism. Kamilla was instrumental in driving the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Research Agenda and was appointed by the City of Cape Town to coordinate its 2010 Research Program. Kamilla served as principal investigator of the CPUT team for CARNIVAL, a 852000 Euro funded project by the EU Commission (2013-2017), focused on the management and legacy of mega-events with partner institutions in Brazil, England, Germany, South Africa, and the USA. Professor Swart served as Regional Editor (Africa) for the Journal of Destination Marketing and Management, and has recently been appointed as Associate Editor.

Steve Bainbridge is the Head of the Sports & Events Management practice sector at Al Tamimi & Company.

Steve has experience advising on a wide array of transactions underpinning the sports sector from sponsorship deals to athlete endorsement agreements; anti-ambush marketing strategies; player contracts; broadcasting, merchandising and licensing agreements; disciplinary issues; and varied sports-specific venue management arrangements. His practice includes key advisory roles representing foreign law firms, individuals, corporate entities, governing bodies and institutions on matters spanning motorsports, horseracing, triathlons, MMA, cycling, golf, tennis, cricket, rugby and football amongst others.

Steve has been appointed as a member of the IAAF Disciplinary Tribunal (Monaco) and has lectured at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law (Tokyo Campus), Waseda University, the University of Stirling and St. John’s University Law School (NY). Dr. Ghanim Mohammed Al-Hajri began his professional career as Director of Administration at Sharjah Airport Authority in 1980. He was appointed to the position of General Manager of Sharjah International Airport Authority in 1997. He graduated from Woodbury University in California, In 1979 he received a Bachelor's degree in airport management and planning from Leoporo Technical University in the United Kingdom in 1990 to join Cranfield College of Aeronautics and received a doctorate in "Sea Air Freight" in 1997.

Dr. Ghanem Al-Hajri held a number of important positions locally and internationally, in addition to a number of honorary and community positions. Local and international, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah in February 2012 appointed Dr. Ghanim Al-Hajri as Chairman of Sharjah International Airport Authority He is currently the General of the UAE Equestrian Federation.

Mike is Regional Managing Director for CSM and is responsible for running the business across its offices and client base in the GCC, Levant and many parts of Africa. He has been working in the industry for over 16 years, eight of which were spent in London developing and delivering award winning sport and entertainment marketing strategies and campaigns for an array of global brands, rights holders, federations, governing bodies and major events. Since September 2009 he has headed up the regional consulting and commercial divisions working across CSM’s GCC client & prospect portfolio for its clients and CSM’s own projects. Mike continues to take part in and follow a number of sports and is also a Special Advisor to a number of organisations including the Emirates Cricket Board, Special Olympics International and #TeamAngelWolf. He and his wife have two daughters, spend time in sub-Sahara Africa supporting a number of charitable projects and regularly run fundraising initiatives to support these projects.

Professor Assem Tharwat is the Dean and Professor at the College of Business Administration at the American University in the Emirates. He earned his M.Sc. in Mathematical Statistics from Cairo University and his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Operation Research) from Charles University, Czech Republic. He accumulated over 30 years of academic experience in Cairo University in teaching both basic and advanced courses in many fields, such as Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Operations Research, Management Sciences, and Production Management. Professor Tharwat published more than 70 Journal and Conference publications and supervised more than 35 thesis' for Ph.D., M.Sc. and MBA. His current research interests are in the areas of DSS, Optimization Applications and Mathematical modeling. Mr Khalid Elaghil is currently completing the Masters of Sport Management, in the College of Business Administration at American University in the Emirates (AUE). With over 9 years of professional business experience, Khalid circulated in different positions (Marketing Manager, Division Manager, and General Manager) and different industries (Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Trading etc) gaining vast management experience. With his special interest in tech businesses, Khalid co-founded an educational startup which won the accelerator competition by Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa). Khalid is also working on starting a new tech startup in the sport industry. He is a semi-professional football athlete representing AUE during Universities Football Competitions. Abdulrazzaq Rajaa Alkabi, has a rich sports background; inspired by his father’s involvement in football. Consequently, his love and passion for sport grew and he decided to start his sporting journey.  He was a football player at Al Wahda Club and United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), judo player in ADCC, fencing player in Emirates Heritage Club. He also completed the AFC B license-coaching course. Abdulrazzaq graduated with a Bachelors in Marketing from the UAEU (2003) followed by a High Diploma in Media & Media Sport from the American University in London (2009). He continued his studies at the Paris-Sorbonne University (Abu Dhabi) and obtained a certificate, FIFA/CIES Executive Diploma in Sports Management (2017). During this certificate completion, he won the FIFA/CIES University Network prize 2018 for the project “GREEN CARD”, creating a sustainable stadia system in the UAE. Abdulrazzaq is currently enrolled in the Masters in Sports Management (2017- 2018) at the American University in Emirates. His football career started in 2009 as an Executive Secretary in the UAE Scout Mission, moved on to being a General Coordinator of the Women’s Football Committee and National Teams Manager currently as well as Specific Games Supervisor from 2015 to date in the UAE Football Association.

Dr. Tariq is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the American University of the UAE. He also served as Director of the Institute of Financial and Tax Sciences at the Faculty of Law, Helwan University, in addition to the Director of the Quality Unit at the Faculty of Law and the High Court of Cassation. Dr Ali earned his Master degree in Physical Education from Emporia State University in Kansas, USA and PhD degree in Physical Education form University of Baghdad, Iraq. He has published papers in the areas of physical Education, Basketball and sport law. He worked as a manager at a big clubs in UAE such as Al Ain sport club, Al Ahli sport club and Al Shabab sport club. He also has extensive experience in coaching basketball with Iraqi National team as a head coach. His current research interests are in the areas of sport law, sport management and coaching. Dr. Mataruna has BA (Hons) and BSc in Physical Education and Sport, PGCert Higher Education, PGCert Human Resource Management, PGCert Sport Training and Methods (Judo). In his Masters dissertation, he explored economic and social aspects of people living in Rio de Janeiro favelas. He has also been awarded a Distinction Postgraduate Diploma in Olympic Studies by the International Olympic Academy (Greece) and Loughborough University (UK). He received the Medal Pierre de Coubertin in 2017, and Medal of Sport Military Honour of International Council of Military Sport (CISM). He has completed the PhD at Gama Filho University focusing on innovation in sport and technology for research. He is black belt in Judo (4th Dan), Taekwondo (1st Dan) and Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dr . Leonardo Mataruna’s key research interests in the sport management, sport for peace and development, business of sport and event management, social media, e-Games. He worked for the Brazilian Navy, Brazilian Olympic Committee/Judo Confederation and at several Universities since 1999 in Brazil, United Kingdom and Germany. Dr. Leonardo attended as part of the Judo Coach team the Olympic Games of Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016; the Paralympic Games of Athens 2004 as coach and, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016 as journalist (commentator at Sportv Channel – GloboSat TV); and the Winter Olympics of Torino 2006, Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014, and FIFA Football Cup 2014 as scientist. He worked as consultant for UNESCO to promote Youth Engagement and Olympic Education.

Dr. Wael is an Assistant Professor at the College of Law, he holds a PhD in Criminal Law, from college of graduates studies in the Egyptian police academy, 2012. Previously, Dr. Wael was a Faculty member in Executive Education at The American University in Cairo, he worked there as an executive director of crises and disasters diploma and has supervised several Masters Students researches in the same university. Dr. Wael worked as a lecturer in the College of Police, Police research center, Institute of Assistants Security and Gesr el Suez Institute, he taught “Empirical cases of crises and disasters”,” criminal investigation”, “Criminal Procedure Law”, “Lessons in operations CID and author of the scientific article”, and “Penal Law”. Dr. Wael was a member of the Board of Directors in The Egyptian Polo Federation and worked as a technical manager in Polo police squad. Dr. Wael has several publications in “Criminal Procedures Law”, “Private detective’s offices”, “Sports Dangers” and “Penal Law”.
